Fall in Love with Your Home Again: A Designer’s Tips for a Seasonal Reset

ree

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, our homes become our cozy sanctuary. Fall is the perfect time to slow down, reset and make simple yet meaningful updates that prepare your space for the cozy months ahead.

Whether you’re organizing, restyling or just craving a little seasonal inspiration, these easy fall reset ideas will help you create a home that feels calm, warm and welcoming all season long.

1. Declutter Before You Cozy Up

Before you bring in new décor or throw blankets, clear the clutter!

Start with the “big three”: entryway, kitchen, and living room. These are the first areas you see each day, and a quick declutter sets the tone for your entire home.

  • Store away summer items like beach towels, sandals and pool gear.

  • Clear countertops and open shelves to make room for warm, layered textures.

  • Donate or recycle items you didn’t use over the summer, your future self will thank you!

Use labeled bins or baskets to organize seasonal swaps so next year’s transition is effortless.

 2. Warm Up Your Palette

Fall is all about layering warmth! You can do this with color and textures not just with blankets! You don’t need to overhaul your décor; instead, swap in rich, earthy tones through accessories:

  • Change out pillow covers for rust, camel, or olive tones.

  • Add a chunky knit throw in cream or caramel.

  • Style a few amber glass candle holders or woven baskets for texture.

These small updates can transform a space in minutes and make it feel instantly cozier.

3. Bring Nature In

Nothing says fall like natural elements. Mix in branches, dried florals and textured greenery for organic warmth.

Try this:

  • A vase of dried eucalyptus or wheat on your dining table.

  • A simple fall garland on your mantel.

  • Wood bowls or cutting boards layered on the kitchen counter for rustic charm.

If you have kids, make it fun! go on a “fall nature walk” and let them pick leaves or pinecones to display in a clear vase.

4. Create a Welcoming Entryway

Your entryway sets the tone for your home. As the weather cools, it’s time to refresh this high-traffic zone.

  • Add a boot tray for muddy shoes and baskets for hats and gloves.

  • Swap your summer wreath for one made with dried leaves or seasonal greenery.

  • Keep a cozy throw or extra umbrella handy for guests.

A well-organized entryway keeps the chaos of daily life (and fall weather!) in check.

5. Restyle Your Living Spaces

Fall invites us to gather — around the table, by the fireplace, or on the sofa. Make your main living areas ready for connection.

  • Rearrange furniture slightly to create conversation-friendly layouts.

  • Layer area rugs for warmth underfoot.

  • Add ambient lighting — think table lamps and candles over harsh overheads.

Even subtle tweaks can make your home feel like a retreat from the chill outside.

6. Refresh Bedrooms for the Season

Swap lightweight bedding for something soft and cozy — think flannel sheets, thicker duvets, or a quilt layered at the foot of the bed.Use warm neutrals or jewel tones to add a seasonal touch without overwhelming the room.

Scent matters, try diffusing cedarwood, vanilla, or clove essential oils for that “fall cabin” feel.

7. Organize for the Months Ahead

Fall is a natural time to get organized before the busy holiday season hits.

  • Edit your pantry and fridge before baking season.

  • Refresh your linen closet with neatly folded towels and sheets.

  • Tidy your mudroom or drop zone to prep for boots, backpacks, and coats.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, start small with one drawer, one closet or one surface at a time.
